Doctor Abbey Ambroson on why she became a doctor

I decided to get into dentistry because I knew I wanted to do something in the healthcare field. But when I went to shadow a dentist, I found that it’s more than just dentistry. It’s also art and a mixture of art and science together, and I love that. So, you’re helping people while doing artistic things at the same time. The most rewarding part about being a dentist is helping people, just knowing that you’re helping them and their overall health, and for patients who need it, creating a nice smile so they feel good about themselves. I would say our biggest positive trait here is that we feel like a family here. Patients feel comfortable when they come. And our number one value is that patients, we try to do the best that we can for each patient. That’s all we want.

I went to dental school at Iowa, and then after I got done with my dental program, I did an extra year in geriatric and special care. And that taught me a lot about care for geriatric patients, people with special needs. And that’s been a big part of our practice, and that’s really helped a lot. I think that it helps because you see that each patient has individual needs. You treat each patient differently. A patient might be missing a tooth, but there might be different scenarios or different treatments for each person. So, any patient that it’s been a long time or they haven’t been to the dentist, I would say our strength, and my strength, in particular, is just to make you feel comfortable that you’ve been here. It’s a judgment-free zone where we can come in, take a look, and just get you back on track getting your routine care.

Meet Dr. Abbey Ambroson

She Loves Helping Patients With Complex Needs

Dr. Abbey Ambroson grew up in Ankeny, Iowa and has built her career around a genuine love for people and a deep commitment to their overall well-being. As a general dentist focused on oral health and preventive care for patients of all ages, her favorite part of the job is the relationships she builds along the way. What drives her every day is watching patients experience real improvements in their oral and overall health, while working alongside a team she loves.

Dr. Abbey earned her Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Iowa before going on to receive her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2012. During dental school, she discovered a passion for working with adult patients who have complex medical needs and was actively involved in the student research program. Those experiences shaped the thoughtful, attentive approach she brings to every patient interaction today.

After graduation, Dr. Abbey completed a Fellowship in geriatrics and special care before practicing general dentistry in Clarinda, Iowa. She has continued to expand her expertise through ongoing continuing education, including specialized training in the use of an FDA-approved injectable for both cosmetic purposes and TMJ disorders. She practices alongside her husband, Dr. Clint, and together they are raising three children: Vivian, Emery, and Theo. In her free time, Dr. Abbey enjoys running, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
